Lying on the border between Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire, Turweston Aerodrome offers many opportunities to get airborne across three fine English counties with a selection of flying days and experiences here on FlyDays.
The roots of the Aerodrome can be traced back to the Second World War, when it was first opened in November 1942 as a bomber training facility for the Royal Air Force. Boasting a T1 hangar, it also had three runways: the first, 10/28 measuring 1,829 m × 46 m, the second, 04/22, measuring 1,280 m × 46 m (which was extended to 1,600 m at a later date) and the third, measuring 1,280 m × 46 m.
Among the squadrons that were based here were the Vickers Wellingtons and Avro Ansons of the No. 12 Operational Training Unit RAF, as well as the de Havilland Mosquito, Airspeed Oxford and the Hawker Hurricane. Although it closed for military usage after the end of WWII in 1945, it was dually retained by the Air Ministry and also for farming and agricultural use.
The Aerodrome as we know it today officially opened in 1994, prior to which, it had been a gliding training base at weekends. Turweston includes an airfield, which still partially uses some of the original 1256 x 134 metre long Asphalt runway, an aero-club and a flight school, as well as hangarage and refuelling facilities.
Three Counties from the Air
Turweston Aerodrome’s centrally positioned location means that there’s the chance to get airborne above three counties all in the same flight, all of which offer very different landmarks.
You could fly in keeping with Turweston’s wartime roots, with a flight over nearby Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, the secret location of the famous Allied Codebreakers who cracked German ciphers during World War II.
Whether it’s there, or towards the glorious rolling countryside of Oxfordshire or seeing the world famous site of British motor racing at Silverstone in Northamptonshire, there’s so many amazing sights to see.
Helicopters at Turweston
Among the flying experiences that we offer to be booked here are our very popular helicopter tours, with a chance to take to the skies for a 6 Mile Buzz experience starting from as little as £39.
On some of our helicopter packages, you can even toast the flight once you’re back on the ground with a glass of something fizzy and bubbly - a real treat to live the high life for the day, in more ways than one.
Flying Lessons at Turweston
We also offer flying lessons in 30 or 60 minute sessions in a Microlight aeroplane. These are carried out under the guidance of a qualified CAA instructor, who will be on hand to ensure your safety, build your confidence and performance and offer feedback on your performance.
Best of all, if you’ve got aspirations to take up a career in aviation, then this valuable experience will also count towards that which is needed to obtain your Private Pilot’s Licence - so it could be a flying day that pays dividends in the future.
